Ocotillo is a very early Western Shipper that has consistently developed large melons in the early planting slot in Desert Southwest trials. This melon has delivered mostly 9s for fruit size, and features a tan shell color with a thick, ropey net at full slip. Fruit have demonstrated a consistent, tight cavity and attractive flesh color.

Gold Express is a Western Shipper for true main season conditions. It typically produces medium to large fruit with a dense net for a superior appearance. Designed for pro-longed harvest conditions, Gold Express features an excellent internal quality with a tight seed cavity and dark, firm flesh. It has performed well in late spring and fall plantings in the Desert Southwest, and provides growers in the San Joaquin Valley a main season variety with improved fruit size.

El Camino has produced large fruit (mostly 9s) with thick flesh and good net coverage under Central Arizona conditions. This melon has also shown adaptation in Central Arizona for both Spring and Fall conditions. It features excellent interior quality and a maturity approximately 2 to 3 days earlier than most main season-type varieties.

Esteem has performed especially well in the Desert Southwest. It features a tight seed cavity, dark orange flesh, and a raised, ropey net with excellent net density providing for a very attractive melon. This variety has produced a very strong robust plant that protects the fruit under adverse conditions and produces fruit that are mostly sizes 9 to 12. When compared to other “true main season”-type varieties, Esteem typically matures 3 to 5 days earlier and requires fewer harvests to finish the field.

Primo features a sutureless exterior with a heavy net, sweet, dark orange flesh, and a small seed cavity.

First Early
Rio Rico is an early maturing Primo-type melon that has shown strong performance in early season Texas
. Maturing approximately 2 days later than Primo and featuring a more rounded melon and denser net, Rio Rico has performed well under tough growing conditions.

Athena is an innovative hybrid cantaloupe with fruit that stays on the vine to maximize sweetness – without going soft. These melons tend to stay firm even when harvested at full slip. This variety does not trade flavor for firmness, making it the melon of choice in the Eastern US.

Aphrodite typically produces large melons weighing 6 to 7 pounds for Eastern US growers, with a maturity 2 to 3 days earlier than Athena. This cantaloupe has shown an improved fruit net, an important advantage for fall plantings or under conditions where net can be weak. Choose Aphrodite for a full season planting program—start and finish with Aphrodite, and plant mid-season with Athena.

Minerva is a larger-fruited Eastern-type melon that has performed well in planting programs. On average, Minerva fruit weighs 2 to 3 pounds more than Athena and matures 2 to 3 days later. The fruit is typically oval in shape to slightly “lobey.” It features slight sutures and a coarse open net that covers the entire melon, including the sutures. This variety has been shown to have a strong, vigorous plant.

Sancho is a Piel de Sapo-type melon with golden green skin and creamy white flesh. It produces very uniform, large, oval-shaped fruit ranging from 6.5 to 9 pounds. The variety has demonstrated an excellent post-harvest shelf life and performs well in local markets and during shipment. To obtain the best fruit quality, it is recommended that growers harvest the fruit when the rind tends towards a golden color. Sancho is a good choice for growers wanting a larger Piel de Sapo-type melon and a disease package that includes intermediate resistance to powdery mildew.

Globstar is a long shelf life cantaloupe with dark orange flesh that is extremely firm with EXCELLENT cantaloupe flavor! Full net exterior with a light green rind color. Fruit size is mostly in the 12 count size range. Maturity is late and is about 10 days later than Acclaim. Brix is 12.0-15.0, firmness 6.5-8.0 lbs with a small cavity.
